Meet a JGI Postdoc: Sara Calhoun

From September 16-20, 2019, we introduce you to some of the postdocs at the JGI in honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which recognizes the contributions of these early career researchers. Through a series of hard-hitting questions, we find out what drives each one.

NPAW 2019 JGI postdoc Sara CalhounWhat are you working on? I have two main projects: 1) Metabolic modeling of fungi/algae, and 2) multiomics analysis of algal strains that are potential biofuel feedstocks.

How do you think that project would change if you were working on it in the year 2330 instead of today? By then, our computational predictions will be nearly 100% accurate.

When did you join JGI? November 2016

Where did you join us from? University of California, San Francisco

What drives your passion outside of JGI? I enjoy both taking ballet classes and attending dance performances.

What song do you currently have on repeat? The entire “Hamilton” soundtrack

What is your favorite quote?  “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.” -Yogi Berra (also attributed to others)

What is your favorite place to visit? Maui

Sara is one of the 12 finalists in this year’s Berkeley Lab Research SLAM. Watch the livestream at streaming.lbl.gov starting 2:30pm PT on Thursday, September 19.
