JGI User Meeting on Biofuels Digest

Genomics research can be applied to energy crops to select for sequencing based on relevance to the DOE missions.  Projects focus on one of three key aspects: the development of biofuel feedstocks; the identification of enzymes that can effectively break down plant fibers into sugar; and the development of processes to ferment plant-derived sugars into liquid biofuel.
At the heart of U.S. biofuel policy agenda, is advancing non-food, low-input renewable energy crops that reduce CO2 emissions while minimizing ecological impacts.  This year’s event, the 5th Annual Meeting held March 24-26 in Walnut Creek, California, highlighted the role of plant genomics in enhancing biomass for energy while achieving standards of sustainability.
