Exploring Uncultivable Microbes at AAAS

SESSION TITLE: Novel Technologies for Exploring the Uncultivated Microbial Majority

Susannah Tringe and Tanja Woyke, the respective heads of our Metagenome and Microbial Programs, have organized a session at this year’s American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Meeting, which starts February 12 at the San Jose Convention Center. The session is entitled “Novel Technologies for Exploring the Uncultivated Microbial Majority,” and covers several experimental and analytic techniques that enable researchers to conduct environmental genomics analyses of uncultivable microbes. Though metagenomics and single-cell genomics have been helpful in allowing researchers to access these microorganisms, their functional characterization still needs improvement.

Presenting during this session are Woyke, and DOE JGI collaborators Steven Hallam from the University of British Columbia and Jennifer Pett-Ridge from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
