Approved Proposals FY20

Fungal Root Endophytes of Soybean

This project investigates fungal root endophytes of the oilseed crop soybean for their potential to deter biotic stresses from root pathogen such as the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines; SCN) and the sudden death syndrome fungal root-rot pathogen (Fusarium verguliforme; SDS). These endophytes produce secondary metabolites toxic to nematodes or antagonistic to other fungal pathogens. Using comparative genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics, this project investigates the transcription responses, chemical metabolites that may be involved in protecting soybean from root pathogens.
