At the recently concluded supercomputing conference (SC16), students from the University of Science and Technology of China, who went by “Team SwanGeese,” won the Student Cluster Competition. (Click here to read the SC16 story about the winners.) One of the team’s advisers was JGI’s Zhong Wang, head of the Genome Analysis group.

Zhong was tapped to participate by team adviser Professor Hong An, a DOE JGI collaborator. “I was glad to be part of this effort by helping the team understand the metagenome problem,” he said. “Dr. An’s team has been looking for big problems that can be solved by HPC, and to me metagenomics is an excellent candidate.”

Feng Li, a SC12 student competitor, is now part of Zhong Wang’s team at the DOE JGI.

SC16 took place November 13-18, 2016 in Salt Lake City Utah and included a “Where are they now?” section for SC student competitors. Among the names on the SC16 poster board was that of Feng Li, who was part of the University of Science and Technology of China’s team to SC12. He has since joined Zhong’s group at the DOE JGI in September and is working on speeding up JGI’s metagenomics applications.
