Meet a JGI Postdoc: Jess Jarett

From September 18-22, 2017, we introduce you to 5 postdocs at the JGI in honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which recognizes the contributions of these early career researchers. Through a series of hard-hitting questions, we find out what drives each one.

What do you work on? I work on the Microbial Dark Matter project, using single cell genomics and metagenomics together to discover and characterize novel phyla of bacteria and  archaea from habitats around the world. It’s a collaboration with over 20 other co-investigators, and an exciting data set for me to ask large scale evolutionary questions.

When did you join JGI? Fall 2013

Where did you join us from? University of New Hampshire

What drives your passion outside of JGI? I volunteer as a cat adoption counselor for two local rescues, and I also enjoy baking, hiking, and ceramics.

What song do you have on constant repeat? “I’ve Got Wheels” – Miranda Lambert

What’s your favorite dessert? Creme brulee

What could the letters JGI stand for other than “Joint Genome Institute”? Just Got In, a suitable replacement for the “we just landed” plane phone call

What do you appreciate most about JGI? The friendly culture, how everyone is always willing to help you if you have a problem or a question.
