Meet a JGI Postdoc: Maureen Berg

From September 17-21, 2018, we introduce you to some of the postdocs at the JGI in honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which recognizes the contributions of these early career researchers. Through a series of hard-hitting questions, we find out what drives each one.

JGI postdoc Maureen Berg

What do you work on?  I work in the Environmental Genomics group led by Emiley Eloe-Fadrosh and in collaboration with the Micro-Scale Applications group led by Rex Malmstrom. Specifically, I am developing methods to link uncultivated viruses with their hosts. My project is particularly exciting because not only do I get to contribute to the development of tools that would be useful to the field as a whole, I am also applying these new methods to uncover fun new viruses in freshwater lakes.

When did you join the JGI?  December 2017

Where did you join us from?  University of California, Berkeley

What drives your passion outside of JGI?  I enjoy being outside, and I like to run. I especially enjoy running outside.

What is your favorite quote?  “Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.” -Rosalind Franklin

What is your favorite food?  Anything that contains nuts.
