Meet a JGI Postdoc: Vega Shah

From September 17-21, 2018, we introduce you to some of the postdocs at the JGI in honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, which recognizes the contributions of these early career researchers. Through a series of hard-hitting questions, we find out what drives each one.

JGI postdoc Vega Shah

What do you work on?  With Esther Singer from the JGI Single Cells Group and through a project led by researchers at the Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology Division, I am working on developing plant growth chambers, EcoPods, that will contain a variety of state-of-the-art sensors and instruments to allow us to replicate field conditions inside the laboratory. My research group is using Panicum hallii, a type of switchgrass, to test the efficacy of EcoPods in replicating a variety of real-world conditions, including events like drought.

When did you join JGI?  August 2018

Where did you join us from?  University of Washington, Seattle

What drives your passion outside of JGI?  I am a competitive table tennis player and a veteran national collegiate athlete. I love to train on the weekends and participate in
tournaments when I have free time.

What is your favorite quote?  “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” -Thomas Edison

What is your favorite food?  Sichuanese peppers and anything super spicy.
