Synthesizing Microbial Expansins with Unusual Activities

In this project 200 expansin proteins from diverse microbes will be synthesized and assayed for their ability to bind to and modify the properties of cellulose and cellulose-related wall polysaccharides. These proteins have potential uses in deconstructing lignocellulosic biomass for conversion to renewable biofuels, nanocellulosic fibers, and commodity biochemicals. The results may also lead to insights into mechanisms of microbe interactions with plants, including pathogenic and mutualistic interactions. This work contributes to DOE’s missions in the energy and environment fields.
