JGI Science @ the Lesher in Contra Costa Times

The researchers, who will speak Monday evening at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, are working with the Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, a federal facility for genetic sequencing of microbes and other life-forms. The terrestrial ecosystem, meaning everything on land — from plants to soil and other geological features —… [Read More]

Earth Microbiome Project in Sacramento Bee

To understand microbes (Bacterial, Archaeal, Eukaryal and Viral) in terms of whom they are and what they do is the challenge of microbial ecology. The EMP presents a revolution in how this problem is tackled and defines both questions and potential suite of tools to provide answers.  Key participants in this unprecedented project include BGI,… [Read More]

Earth Microbiome Project in GenomeWeb

BGI will provide a range of services and support for the Earth Microbiome Project, an effort to sample, sequence, and analyze microbial communities from all over the globe. The multi-disciplinary EMP effort, the largest sequencing project yet undertaken, will conduct metagenomics studies of 200,000 samples of microbes from soil, air, sea, and freshwater systems from… [Read More]

Stressed metagenome study on Pollution Online

“We are looking to better understand the evolution of microbes in the groundwater plume,” Watson said. “The microbes that can break down nitrate into nitrogen can have a long-term benefit toward attenuating the plume.”  Watson added that researchers particularly want to better understand the genetic makeup of microbes that can metabolize oxidized forms of uranium… [Read More]

JGI’s involvement in Human Microbiome Project on GenomeWeb

The center’s Web portal aims to provide researchers with web-based visualization and query applications and software, as well as a robust computational analysis of HMP data. The Website also hosts information on standing operating procedures, a resource for community involvement in reference strain selection, and quality control measures. In order to meet all of the… [Read More]
