Calls for User Proposals

What kind of proposals can be submitted?

For accepted proposals, sequencing, synthesis, metabolomics and analysis will be paid for by the Department of Energy’s funding of the JGI. There is no cost to the user and no granting of funds.

CSP New Investigator Call

  • Status:  OPEN
  • Only for investigators who do not already have a CSP or FICUS proposal.
  • Proposals may include synthetic biology, sequencing and metabolomics.

CSP Functional Genomics call

  • Status: OPEN (replaces DNA Synthesis call)
  • Proposals may include synthetic biology, transcriptomics, DAP-seq, and metabolomics.
  • Focus on translating genomic information to biological function

CSP Large Scale Call

  •  Status: FY26 call open on 2/13/25
  • Large-scale sequencing, synthetic biology and metabolomics proposals.
  • Proposals must be preceded by Letters of Intent.

FICUS JGI-EMSL Collaborative Science Initiative

  • Status: FY26 call open on 1/16/25
  • High risk/high reward proposals that make use of JGI’s sequencing, metabolomics, and synthetic biology capabilities, and EMSL’s proteomics and imaging capabilities
  • Proposals must be preceded by Letters of Intent

FICUS JGI-NERSC-KBase Biological Data Science

  • Status: CLOSED
  • Submitters may request large-scale computational analyses of sequence data to solve problems relevant to DOE missions.
  • Proposals may not include sequencing, metabolomics or synthetic biology requests.
